So, question. I have a 1986 Honda Accord LXi, and with the super duper OBD dinosaur system of it, I figured out that my EGR valve is at least malfunctioning, and the reason I looked is because I have a light that says PGM-FI (programmed fuel injection) and it lit up today, pretty much a crude check engine light. If the EGR valve is malfunctioning, would it cause problems with my fuel delivery at all? Once the light kicked one I did notice that my car was idling 200 rpm's above normal.

If you're idling high it could be your IACV, easiest thing to check and a possible culprit, that's the first thing I would check since it can be adjusted with a screw driver (on E30's at least)

What is the IACV? And that is the thing, I turned off the car once I got to where I was going, and turned it back on, idling normal, no lights, the code is a stored code, so the ecu may only be throwing it every now and then. Pretty much just trying to figure out what to try and look at first, because the high idling seemed to be linked with my PGM-FI light turning on

Idle Air Control Valve.

Most of the time it bypasses the throttle body (before the throttle plate it taps in to the intake and routes a small amount of air around the throttle plate to keep the car idling when it's completely closed).

When I had an E30 they would constantly break or jam up and make the car idle to high or low.

Hmm, thanks for that idea, I will definitely check it out, this car was poorly maintained before I got it so chances are that is messed up as well. But do you happen to know if the EGR would screw up the fuel delivery at all? Because I was reading up on them and read that it feeds from the combustion chamber, so if it's stuck closed it might cause problems like that? First time dealing with actual engine running issues so I'm just trying to figure out what parts I might need, because a new EGR valve runs 160 bucks.

Well if the EGR valve is broken and your car needs it, it could cause a rough idle, knocking, etc. etc.

The point of an EGR valve is basically to dilute the air your engine is using for combustion by mixing it with recirculated exhaust gases (this lowers minimum octane required and your car is set to work with the EGR valve).

So if it goes out, it could case problems, yes.

Hmm, alright, I suppose I'll just start out with replacing the EGR, and checking other delivery systems as well then, appreciate the help. And back to the IACV, how would I check that to see if it is malfunction?

I'm just coming from experience with my E30, but if you take it off (two hose clamps probably and a plug) and you shake it, it shouldn't make any rattles.
